Write an Essay on Lachit Borphukan in 500 Words
Lachit Borphukan essay in 500 words is as below:
The brave general Lachit Borphukan’s name is written in gold in the history of Assam. The lesson of patriotism taught by the great warrior in the 1671 battle of Saraighat was unparalleled. Such examples of commitment to duty and love for the motherland are rare.
Lachit was born in the year 1622 in Pragjyotishpur. His father, Momai Tamuli Borbarua, was the commander-in-chief of the Ahom Army. Much later, King Chakradhwaj Singha appointed the valiant general Lachit as the supreme commander of the Ahom Army. The king had gifted him a sword as a symbol of honour. Its handle was made of gold.
Lachit soon started taking good care of his army and raised its morale by empowering it through various means. He completed his preparations by the summer of 1677 and won the war against the Mughals, thereby regaining the throne of Guwahati.
In the famous battle of Saraighat fought between the Mughals and The Ahoms, Lachit Borphukan, along with his small army, fought valiantly and ultimately drove away the Mughal forces led by Ram Singh.
In this battle, an incident took place that has found an honourable spot in the history of Assam as well as India. The Mughal forces had invaded the Ahom Kingdom. To stop the Mughals, a barrier wall was to be constructed. Lachit’s own maternal uncle was handling the task.
Later at night when Lachit visited the spot, he found the workers taking rest with the work still incomplete. The enemy could launch an attack any moment. This was a blunder. At this, Lachit got furious and beheaded his own uncle saying, “Momai dekhot ke dangor no hoi.” [My uncle is not above the country.] Viewing the scene, workers hastened up the work and the obstruction got built up in time. Such an incident of commitment to duty, discipline, and war-awareness is rarely found in the world history.
The Mughals, finding an obstruction, took the water way through the Brahmaputra. Facing the current from the opposite direction and due to weather conditions that suited the Ahom soldiers, the Mughals suffered defeat.
At one point in the battle, the Ahom soldiers had lost hope. Their leader, Lachit was sick and the Mughal army with its giant size looked invincible. However, Lachit said to his sepoys, “I’ll fight for the motherland. My health is not more important than the country. I give you all the freedom to go back. But please tell the king that his general fought till the end and carried out the king’s order till the last breath.” Hearing this, the soldiers’ enthusiasm got revived and immediately they were at their toes to fight.
Even with a deteriorating health, Lachit fought the decisive battle of Saraighat with a fleet of seven boats only. Using Guerrilla warfare techniques, he handed defeat to a big army. Lachit’s name will always be remembered in the history of Assam and India with great honour. We, the Indians, are proud of the brave son of Assam, Lachit Borphukan.
